Acquaint freshman with the requirements for both agency employment and advanced degrees in the field sciences. Required for all incoming Biology majors in the following emphasis areas: Ecology and Field Biology, Botany, Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, and Wildlife Ecology and Conservation. Offered on a Pass-Fail basis only.

Designed to acquaint the student with the fundamental principles and processes of life as found in animals and plants and their relation to the everyday life of man. Corequisite: BIOL 112 General Biology Laboratory.

Laboratory exercises to accompany BIOL 111 General Biology. Corequisite: BIOL 111 General Biology.

A basic ecological approach to the principles and processes of life with emphasis placed on human pressures and technology, and the effect of these on the organism-environment complex. Laboratory exercises accompany lecture. Not applicable toward a biology major.

Intensive study of selected topics in biology. Lecture and laboratory. May be repeated if subject matter is different. Each class limited to a single topic. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.

(4 hours lecture and laboratory). An introduction to biology including principles of science, basic chemistry, origin of life, cell biology, genetics, viruses, prokaryote life, evolution, and systematics. Prerequisite: BIOL 111/112 General Biology/Laboratory or minimum ACT comp score of 23 and biology major or major requiring the course; or permission of Department.

(4 hours lecture and laboratory). A continuation of Principles of Biology I including biology of protista, fungi, plants, and animals. Prerequisite: BIOL 211 Principles of Biology I and biology major/minor or major requiring the course; or permission of Department. Course will be assessed an additional class fee.

An integrated study of the structure and functions of the human body. This course is not a substitute for BIOL 656/657 Human Physiology/Laboratory and BIOL 660 Human Anatomy and Dissection. Prerequisite: BIOL 111/BIOL 112 General Biology/Laboratory or BIOL 211 Principles of Biology I and BIOL 212 Principles of Biology II. Corequisite: BIOL 258 Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory.

Laboratory exercises to accompany BIOL 257 Anatomy and Physiology. Prerequisite: BIOL 111/BIOL 112 General Biology/Laboratory or BIOL 211 Principles of Biology I and BIOL 212 Principles of Biology II. Corequisite: BIOL 257 Anatomy and Physiology. Course will be assessed an additional class fee.

History, philosophy and current uses of epidemiological research and its associated insights to improve public health including descriptive epidemiology, association and causation, analytical methods, evidence based public health studies and their application to health and promotion at the community level.

For students intending to teach biology or general science in secondary schools. Assisting in the preparation and instruction in various biology course laboratories at the 100 and 200 levels. A minimum of four hours assisting per week is required. Prerequisite: Students must be in the teacher education curriculum; permission of the instructor.

Cell structure and function with emphasis on energy metabolism and use of genetic information. Prerequisites: 8 hours biology, 10 hours chemistry, or permission of instructor.

History and philosophy of conservation, resource economics and risk management, causes of and solutions to environmental problems based on the theories and practices of resource management. Prerequisite: General education requirements in natural and physical sciences.

The principles of genetics with emphasis on the cytological mechanism of inheritance: physical basis, linkage mapping of genes and gene action. Intended primarily for biology majors. Prerequisite: BIOL 211 Principles of Biology I, BIOL 212 Principles of Biology II, and 5 hours of chemistry. Corequisite: BIOL 323 Genetics Laboratory.

Laboratory exercises to accompany BIOL 322 Genetics. Corequisite: BIOL 322 Genetics.

The theories which form our basic concepts of ecosystems. Abiotic, individual, species, population, community and ecosystem perspective of living systems. Human ecosystems and man as a member of natural systems. Prerequisite: General Education Life Sciences requirement.

Fundamentals of morphology, physiology, growth, taxonomy, and cultivation of bacteria and related micro-organisms. Including a brief introduction to their role in industry, agriculture and medicine. Prerequisite: BIOL 111/112 General Biology/Laboratory or BIOL 211 Principles of Biology I, and CHEM 105/106 Introductory Chemistry/Laboratory or CHEM 215/216 General Chemistry I/Laboratory. Corequisite: BIOL 372 General Microbiology Laboratory.

Laboratory experiences concerning the morphology, cultivation, physiology, and applied aspects of bacteria and related microorganisms. Prerequisite: BIOL 111/112 General Biology/Laboratory or BIOL 211 Principles of Biology I, and CHEM 105/106 Introductory Chemistry/Laboratory or CHEM 215/216 General Chemistry I/Laboratory. Corequisite: BIOL 371 General Microbiology.

Lecture and Laboratory. The scientific classification and identification of ferns and seed plants, with emphasis on the local flora. Methods of collection, preservation and preparation of herbarium specimans included. Pre-requisite: BIOL 212 Principles of Biology II or permission of instructor.

A self-study course. Covers the words and roots of words commonly used in the life sciences and medicine. No class meetings; 2 examinations each semester.

Survey of the biology, chemistry, ecology and geomorphology of streams and rivers. Lecture and lab. Prerequisites: BIOL 330 Principles of Ecology or permission of instructor.

Discussion of current issues in cellular and molecular research. Prerequisites: 6 courses in biology and/or chemistry.

Lecture and laboratory. Structure, classification, physiology, ecology, and economic importance of insects. Prerequisite: BIOL 212 Principles of Biology II.

Basic concepts regarding the nature of viruses and their properties, together with techniques for their growth, characterization and identification with emphasis on the major groups of animal viruses. Prerequisite: BIOL 371/BIOL 372 General Microbiology/Laboratory.

An overview of key concepts, theories, and models in the field of animal behavior through an evolutionary framework. Emphasis will be placed on practicing the skills and methods used in observing and analyzing local species' behavior. Prerequisites: BIOL 111 General Biology, Biol 211 Principles of Biology I, and Biol 212 Principles of Biology II.

Available only to students enrolled in the professional semester. A supervising professor will visit each student teacher. Additional mentoring, outreach, and support are available to first-year teachers who maintain contact with the department.Concurrent enrollment in the professional semester is required. Offered on a Pass-Fail basis only.

A cooperative education experience in a career area in biology. Requires a formal agreement between the instructor and the immediate supervisor of the industry or agency. Prerequisite: 15 hours of biology and permission of instructor. May be repeated for a maximum of three hours.

Lecture and laboratory. Application of ecological principles toward the manipulation of terrestrial wildlife populations. Laboratory sessions stress techniques, local management practices and discussion with wildlife personnel. Prerequisites: BIOL 330 Principles of Ecology, BIOL 212 Principles of Biology II.

Systematics and identification of grasses, focusing on subfamilies, genera, and the most common species regionally. Some field trips required on weekends. Prerequisites: BIOL 405 Taxonomy of Vascular Plants or permission of instructor.
